Pritzker Prize–winning architect Zaha Hadid and Karl Lagerfeld teamed up to make an event to mark the 50th year of the iconic quilted Chanel 2.55 handbag. Hadid is known for daringly curvaceous, highly futuristic designs, some of them so complex in conception that they are impossible to build.
The two designers decided to build a mobile container that would travel the world for two years, starting in Hong Kong in March 2008, then Tokyo, New York, London and Moscow before ending in Paris in 2010.
Hadid, who is known for designs that push technology to its limits, created a flying-saucer form made of torqued reinforced plastic panels, which had never before been used on a building. The pavilion, commissioned by Chanel head designer Karl Lagerfeld, hosts an exhibition of artworks inspired by Chanel bags by 20 artists and called Mobile Art, so inside, 20 international contemporary artists show works inspired by the bag.
Chanel donated the exhibition pavilion to Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and was installed in 2011.
